Bas Louter is one of the few artists who deal almost entirely with the medium of drawing. In his mainly large-format works he combines figurative images with abstract patterns and structures. The film metropolis Los Angeles, the artist’s place of residence for the last six years, serves as a source of inspiration. Louter picks up on the visual aesthetics of Hollywood’s film industry while transforming an imagery which is directed towards pathos and intensity into the low-frequency voltage range of a drawing whose characteristic is its constraint. Nevertheless the original material of an industry of images aimed at enactment and staging constantly remains perceptible throughout his partly minimalistic works. Through the transformation into a display mode that seems contrary to the intended message of the pictorial object a peculiar atmosphere is created which appears familiar and foreign at the same time.
